Amazon.com Product Description The Yamaha HTR-5850 XM-ready digital hometheater receiver is a full-featured digital home theater receiver that sports some serious features. Component video-up conversion takes composite signals and converts them into a component signal. This not only ensures the highest quality video from any source, it means you only need one connection to your HDTV monitor. No more switching inputs according to your source--it can all go through the component video connection. Some other major features on the Yamaha HTR-5850 include 6.1-channel discrete amplification (105 w x 6 RMS) and Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) amplifier design concept that ensures the highest signal purity, and 14 surround programs. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that allows private listening enjoyment of multichannel music or movie sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, through ordinary headphones. The system's digital-to-analog converters use an extremely high performance 192 kHz/24-bit operation type and perform accurate sound field reproduction for high-quality multichannel sources. And for two-channel stereo, they provide outstanding separation and precise musical delineation. In addition, the HTR-5850-SL has high-quality two-channel and multichannel surround reproduction and reproduces surround for 5.1 channels and 2.1 (virtual surround). The HTR-5850 is also XM Satellite Radio ready, which means that with the addition of an XM Connect-and-Play and XM subscription, you can tune into your favorite XM broadcasts.

The HTR-5850 also features Yamaha's exclusive Quad-Field Cinema Digital Sound Field Processing, or DSP--Yamaha's way of recreating the ambiance of a stadium, a concert hall, or an intimate club in the comfort of your own home. With 14 different sound programs that provide multiple variations, every movie and every piece of music will sound right in your home theater. Discrete power transistors, rather than chips, are used in the amplifier section to provide the cleanest sound possible. The amp delivers 105 watts each to seven channels, and the HTR-5850 can accommodate DVD, CD, MC/CDR, and digital TV/cable. Three optical digital outputs assure the finest possible signal leaving the receiver for your other components. A set of front panel A/V inputs allows for simple temporary connection. The receiver also features an AM/FM digital tuner with 40 station presets. What's in the Box HTR-5850 receiver, remote control, batteries, AM antenna, and FM antenna.
Customer Review
Best Customer Review : I am really undecided if this unit is better than the one I had in terms of sound quality and volume. So I have mixed feelings on doing this review. I'm sure it would be a major improvement for those that don't have a good working receiver.
What I like about it: The ability to change the sound level of each individual speaker. The 6 channel mode where one could add a rear center speaker that I have yet to add on. The XM satelite radio capability although one would have to purchase the unit (cheap) and sign up for an account with the XM Satelite Radio service.
Here's a nice feature: The ability to convert Composit Video Signal to S-Video Signal, and S-Video signal to Component Video Signal for better picture quality. And when would one use this? When you have an old unit (like a DVD/VCR player)that doesn't have the S-video or Component video output.
What I don't like: What I am dissapointed with is that it lacks the on-screen display that the 620 had, where I could see the changes I make right on the tv monitor. For an old guy like me, that's a nice feature instead of trying to squint and read the led on the receiver.
But whatever negative issue I mentioned above, please don't use this as your basis for deciding on purchasing a Yamaha Receiver. I have had THREE Yamaha receivers in the past and I do LOVE them. Built like a tank and works great. This is just my mistake in making this upgrade and as an analogy, what I did was like upgrade from a 4 cylinder engine to a 4 1/2 cylinder engine (if there was such a thing!). The bottom line is that you won't see much difference. What I should have done is upgraded to a Yammie 1500 or 2400, but my financial situation dictated what I could buy. I guess I was just icthing to upgrade to something new. Shudda saved my money, ... a lesson learned!
Customer Review 2 : THIS IS AN EXCELLENT HOME THEATER RECEIVER WHICH I OWN. - stewart L - flushing ,ny THIS IS AN EXCELLENT RECEIVER THAT PRODUCES 100W X 6,WITH VERY LOW DISTORTION.YOU HAVE NEARLY EVERY INPUT YOU COULD POSSIBLY NEED,IN A STANDARD HOME THEATER,SET-UP.I ALSO LIKE THAT THIS UNIT HAS A 4 OHM LOW IMPEDENCE SWITCH.THIS IS VERY HELPFUL BECAUSE MANY SPEAKERS RATED AT 8 OHMS,MAY DROP TO AS LOW AS 2 OHMS,OR EVEN LOWER.MANY AMPLIFIERS OVER-HEAT,OR GO INTO PROTECTION,OR CURRENT LIMITING.THIS COULD TURN THE AVERERGE RECEIVER INTO A 1 WATT AMPLIFER,IN THE REAL WORLD.WHEN AN AMPLIFIER CLIPS YOUR SPEAKERS MAY BE DAMAGED.ACTUALLY THE MORE CLEAN POWER YOU HAVE,THE LESS CHANCE YOU HAVE TO DAMAGE YOUR EQUIPMENT.NOW THE YAMAHA HTR5850 FITS THE BILL.IT HAS HIGH POWER, HIGH CURRENT,OUTPUT,AND LOW DISTORTION.YOU CAN ALSO LISTEN TO XM-SATELLITE RADIO.WITH AN ADDITIONAL ADAPTER.I FOUND THE YAMAHA TO BE EASY TO SET UP.THIS IS A COMPUTERIZED SET UP FOR THE SOUND,HOWEVER YOU CAN SET THINGS UP MANUALLY,IF YOU WISH.YOU SHOULD USE A Y ADAPTER FROM THE SUBWOOFER OUT TO YOUR SUBWOOFER,IF IT HAS A DUAL STEREO INPUTS.THIS IS JUST A RECOMMENDATION,AS I THINK IT IMPROVES PERFOMANCE.THIS RECEIVER IS FANTASTIC.THE SOUND IS STUNNING,WITH MOVIES,AND MUSIC.THE YAMAHA IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY ME.YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS RECEIVER.
