Customer Review

Best Customer Review : Replacement in the sense that we had hurricane style rains for weeks straight and my roof leaked directly above my home theater equipment - of course!

I digress, this was offered as a replacement by the insurance company from another Yamaha receiver from at least 7 years ago.

This has been a wonderful receiver and although the remote doesn't look as cool as the old "silver surfer" with a front flap, it's far more usable.

I docked it a star because the one thing I think it lacks for this price point is dual HDMI outs. I use this with a home theater PC and would like to run both inputs into the receiver with two outputs, one to a projector and another to a small LCD monitor.

Other than that one small issue, highly recommened.

This is a great receiver - when it works. The sound quality and customizations available are unmatched in this price range. You will need a PhD in electrical engineering to fully appreciate (and use) all of the complex features, but if even a basic enthusiast can enjoy this thing - again, when it works. But I won't repeat what others have said about the features.

The problem I have had is that mine has lost video output from the one HDMI out - TWICE. The first time was about after a month of use. The audio was still transmitting and the component out worked just fine. I should add that this came on with ZERO warning. Worked fine one night, the next day - black screen. I did the basic troubleshooting first, yada yada, then took it into my local service center (and was without my unit for 3 weeks) where it was repaired at no charge by replacing the entire board. Then, my unit worked as expected again for another 8 weeks or so until the same exact problem happened again - no HDMI video out, everything else kosher. This time I called my local repair shop and they told me that they have no other ideas other than swapping out the board again, so I should call Yamaha instead, which I have done. I'm currently awaiting Yamaha's response. In the meantime, I bought a 0 Sony 7.1 receiver from Best Buy two nights ago in a pinch (I paied 00 on Amazon for this unit), and bashfully, I must say that I cannot tell the difference yet in quality (only that it doesn't look or feel as "fancy"). I tend to think that "durability" and workmanship are why some units are more expensive - unfortunately I cannot attest to the durability of my particular V3800.

For what it's worth, I have a basic home theater (projector, receiver, 7.1 surround, blu-ray, PS3, etc.) with all of my equipment drawing power through a Monster power conditioner and surge protector and a 25ft HDMI cable running through the wall and ceiling to a ceiling-mounted projector, also plugged in locally into a conditioner/protector. All of my video components are connected via HDMI. All that is to say that I have a common setup with the basic/foreseeable safeguards. So I'm really at a loss on how to rate this product. I hate when users give 1 star ratings and the like based on quirky, idiosyncratic experiences, so I hesitate to do that. Perhaps I got a lemon? Perhaps others have had no issues? All I can say is that after two rounds of the same problem, this would-be 5-star unit is only 3-stars in my book.

**One other thing. Ergonomically, I think this model has a minor design flaw. The HDMI out is really really low on the back of the unit, and to the far rear left end, so it runs the risk of bumping into things. But since mine was just sitting in the entertainment center, stationary, I really don't know what role this played.

Customer Review 2 : The Yamaha RX-V3800BL Home Theater Receiver - Opera lover - Hartford, CT United States
The Yamaha RX-V3800BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver is an awesome piece of equipment. I can't begin to rephrase the manufacturer's product description, but in our experience, the Receiver lived up to everything that Yamaha promised. It works seamlessly with our TV, BluRay, iPod dock, etc., and is a wonderful radio in itself (yes, we still listen to the radio!). And our sound system (the Klipsch Quintet SL Home Theater System) responds well to the variety of sound qualities that the receiver can produce. We are really glad that we decided on this model--it's well worth the price.
